Library Search

 

Library Search allows you to search for books and journals located in the library, e-books, and journal articles within the Library's online collections, all at the same time. It can also be used to search just the Library's print collection.

This page will help you to understand some of the basics of Library Search, but additional Search Tips and Advanced Tools are also available.

 

Results

The results are displayed like this:

You will see that the main part of the results screen is divided into three areas:

  1. The grey list of links on the left allows you to refine your search (get fewer results) by excluding certain results from your initial search.
  2. The main part of the screen allows you to see a little more information about each result, or click on the 'Preview' links to see more detail.
  3. An empty grey space (this is where the preview information used to appear).

 

Sorting your results

Your search results will automatically be sorted by relevance (how often and how close together your search terms are).

You can also sort your results by date. To do this, click on the 'relevance' link at the top of your list of results and then click on one of the Date options which appears.

 

Refining your search

Clicking on any link in the left column will limit your results to items within that category e.g. you can limit your search to only journal articles by clicking on the 'Journal Article' link in the 'Content Type' section. This will give you results more related to academic research in the area of your search.

You can also refine your search to a specific Discipline (subject area) or by specific subject terms by using the links here.

Clicking on the 'More...' link at the bottom of each section will list all of the options available for refining your search.

This will open a new menu to the side showing you all of the options available e.g.:

You can choose to include or exclude any of the categories you see.

To include a category and limit your search to this category, click on it (this will make a green tick appear next to the category).

To exclude a category hover your pointer over they category and then click on the red cross to exclude it. This will then cause the category to be struck through.

When you have selected the categories you wish to include or exclude from your search, click on 'Apply'.

By clicking on the 'Discipline' header you can also sort this menu by the number of results for each discipline (Sort by Rank), rather than Alphabetically (the default setting).

Lastly, you can search for categories using the 'Filter list' search box.

This means that your search can be refined from thousands of results down to a more manageable number in only three or four clicks.

 

Date slider

The date slider allows you to quickly refine your results to a range of dates e.g. the last ten years (the standard for academic rigour), by clicking on and dragging either of the two pins.

You can also enter a more specific date range (down to the level of specific days) into the boxes below the slider, or use the links under these boxes to set a pre-specified limit.

 

Clearing filters

If you wish to return to the full list of your search results (e.g. the number before you started refining your search) you can do this by clicking on the 'Clear filters' at the top of the column.

 

Books and eBooks

When you use Library Search you will usually find resources of different types e.g. books, book reviews and journal articles. However, Library Search does not distinguish between Books and eBooks in the results.

In order to tell the difference between these two types of resources you can use the links in the main part of the page:

The 'Book' link will take you to where you can check availability of the item in the Library (and give you the library shelfmark). The 'eBook' link will take you to where you can access the full text online.

 

Email results/details/link

You can email yourself the details of any resource you find by clicking on the Email button.

This will also email the link to the article

 

Add to folder

You can add the details of any resource you find to a temporary folder by clicking on the 'Add to folder' icon.

You will then see that the number of items in your folder above increased.

Adding items to a folder allows you to treat their details as a group for emailing or exporting to citation software e.g. Zotero.

 

Emailing multiple results

Once there are items in your folder, you can email yourself the references of all of the items at the same time.

 

Accessing content when not taken directly to the article

Sometimes, when you click to access the full text of an article you will not be taken directly to where you can access it. Instead, you will be taken to where you can access the journal which the article appears in, or the issue of the journal which the article appears in (this is the AUB Resource Linker).

When you click on these 'Journal or Issue' links you will then have to navigate your way to the full text on your own.

The easiest way to do this will be to find a link for the journal 'Archive' or 'Back issues'.

Clicking on this will take you to a list of all of the volumes (and perhaps issues) of the journal.

From the resource linker screen, use the volume, issue and year information to navigate to the issue of the journal which your article appears in.

You will then see a list of articles in that issue.

From here you should be able to access the article information page (containing the citation details, abstract of the article and a link to the full text) or the full text directly.

 

Referencing

When you mouse over a result you will see that the article information panel has a 'Cite' button at the top.

Clicking on this will give you a citation for the item, which you can use if you need to reference the resource.

After reformatting this in accordance with the AUB Referencing Guidelines you will be able to use it in the reference section of your assignment.
